College Readiness: A National Dilemma

According to the National Center for Education Statistics(NCES) in 2013 90% of all college and university undergraduates had a non credit bearing class( NCBC) on their transcript. This is a rapidly growing phenomena and has resulted in much finger pointing as to who is responsible for the growing number of high school graduates who are seemingly unprepared for post secondary entry level courses in Mathematics and English. This past year the Monterey Institute for Technology Education, with financial support from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, released a free tool called EdReady which will not only measure a high school graduates level of college readiness, but the tool will also create a custom remediation course of study which allows college bound students to address deficiencies in Math and English prior to enrolling in college and being required to take and to pay for a NCBC. The tool can also differentiate the level of readiness requirements between different colleges and universities. This session will provide attendees a chance to see the impressive results of this tool during it's first year, learn how different high schools have implemented and customized the tool, and gain a deep understanding of how this tool can also address readiness for other levels of content such as the ACT, the SAT, or even Algebra 1. Session attendees will also have an opportunity to enroll themselves into the tool and measure their own proficiency in mathematics.
